Ain't Nothin' but a Houndstooth!

Houndstooth Redux: Scottish in origin [also called guncheck, dogtooth, or four-and-four check], this fabric is so named because its pattern is reminiscent of the jagged back teeth of a hound. The familiar print, which debuted on clothing in the 1930s, is now limited neither to basic black and white, nor to menswear-inspired items! Look at the clever sequined dress designs showcased on the Ashish N Soni runway.

  11. i struggle with houndstooth just because SO MANY stores have super cheap versions of it- the only way I can wear it now is if it's made out of high quality material- or else i end up feeling like some skater girl with a hurley shirt. yuck.

  28. I don't mind big coloured (i.e not b&w) houndstooth prints but some of the smaller black and white prints make my brain spaz out so I can't look at them. Which is a shame because they can be so chic!

  29. Great theme and totally fabulous selection of items CC!

Houndstooth is one of my favourite patterns - I have yet to see a houndstooth item I didn't like.

Thanks so much for your wonderful compliment and feedback on my shoes sweetie! I've decided to leave the shoes they way they are.

Also, I definitely look forward to seeing a Spring 2009 ABC post! You'll do an excellent job with that as well, I'm sure.

Take care and have a great weekend darling :)

  38. I've got a love/hate relationship to this pattern. I have a houndstooth dress, and some days I hate it while other days I love it. It's so strange! But I love the way you present this pattern, you have such fabulous posts, dear.

  39. We used to call this fabric "pied de poule" and the larger print "pied de coq" (after the print of a hen or rooster foot). Whatever the name, it's "indemodable", i.e. something that does not go out of fashion.

  52. Excellent collection of examples. Almost makes houndstooth look reasonably cool. Can't wait 'til the fad burns out though. Like a bat on the side of a spaceshuttle.
