Filthy Habit?

Smoke ‘em if you got ‘em, darlings…
We all know that models smoke (just witness the lovely Georgina Stojilkovic backstage at Hermés, February 2009, via nymag.com) … but the fact that photographers allow (or encourage) them to do so during a photo shoot is rather shocking! Do you find these photos appalling or appealing, darlings?

  2. I used to smoke and while the models look beautiful the cigarettes look ugly. And the one lighting the cigarette on the stove haha I tried that once and set my hair on fire!

  4. The smoking fetish is very powerful in photography. I quit smoking some months ago but found all pics awesome as smoking gives to every model more self confidence and sex appeal.

  5. Smoking is a filthy habit...the models look gorgeous, the cigarettes only take away from the photo.

  6. Not a smoker, but don't find the pix appalling. I think some of them are quite beautiful and don't consider high fashion pix to be reality, just another form of entertainment.

  7. i don't smoke and won't encourage anyone t do so, but i have to admit that any women with a cigarette in her hand has that "ce je ne sais quoi" that makes her really apealling and sexy

  8. Being around smokers in my family, I have learned how to tolerate smoking, but I still find it very unattractive and unhealthy. However, everyone has their own little, bad habits. Some of these pictures are really stunning.

  9. I'm a smoker and will confess to finding the pictures appealing, not always mind you, sometimes it can look quite vulgar.

  10. Neither appalling or appealing, some even a bit amusing (like the blonde by the stove - her hair is about to go up in flames!)

  11. Ha sido una imagen recurrente para la fotografía durante mucho tiempo, muy sensual... que quizá vayamos dejando atrás???

  12. I personally don't find smoking very appealing but people have different tastes.

  15. Good morning sunshine! It is what it is, I was previewing a video France just this morning where the interviewer was smoking while narrating. Kate moss trying to take a drap with her toes, priceless!

  16. I hate cigarettes and smoking with a passion. It isn't sexy unless you like kissing an ashtray =) xo

  17. I can't have a right distance because I do smoke... even tho it isn't because it's glam, it's merely for the nicotine itself (which is even worse I think)
I do believe it's sad to glamorize smoke, even tho it is aesthetically appealing.
Always the same hypocrisy of our society...

  18. I could never smoke. I don't know, those models won't be beautiful for long if they keep the habit.

  19. smoking hasn't really looked sexy since the 50's.....although it does sometimes fit the rockstar image. even madonna who doesn't smoke, has taken a few pics with a cig and it just kind of worked.

love your themes as always! :) ♥

  20. I honestly think it's high time people stop using cigs in ads, compaigns, movies, commercials etc. If you can't get your idea through to people without smoking being involved, then maybe you're not such a good of a photographer/movie maker/marketologist/etc lol

  21. I am always so shocked when I buy a non-UK mag and they have smoking models and smoking ads, you just cant do that over here! There is something really repulsive about Kate moss in that foot smoking photo!!

  22. It looks strangely sexy to me - until I think of the smell, which reminds me of how disgusting it really is.

  23. I dont smoke and dont find these pics that appealing either!

  25. i´m not a big fan of smoking, but i personally think that most photos with a cigarette look very classy

    xx

  26. i love smoking, i don't think its a problem at all. ppl on the streets often randomly tell me stop smoking because it kills. then i should have the right to say stop eating to an overweight person in a restaurant.

but on a lighter note, these models look absolutely fabulous.

  27. The images are sexy with or without the smoke. Personally, I hate smoking and being around it in any form. They probably snap those shots for controversial viewing, it worked...

  28. and yet so sexy....

    - + - = sexy

  29. I don't smoke and think its awful that someone feels the need to. BUT, I have to admit that it looks suspiciously sexy in photos! haha

  30. excellent post dear ! especially since I quit !
Love Lara Stone, I think she's a huge smoker ;-)

  31. cigarettes are the opposite of beauty to me, maybe that's why models look even more beautiful in comparison. Wish they didnt though ;)

love the fact that you pay attention to smoking in a whole post!

  37. I don't smoke but I think that the pictures look really nice. Allthough lighting a ciggarette with a stove doesn't seem like best idea.

  38. I don´t know. It makes me feel weird. I don´t know if I like it or not. It adds something but at the same time it provokes a negative reaction.

  40. I don't smoke, but sometimes it makes a picture/photo look sexy, I think

  41. Oh my gosh! I was just going to post about this gross phenomenon today! I do not like smoking at all. it is way gross and I do not like how the fashion industry continues to condone smoking and make smoking looks "sexy" when really it is smelly and not cute

    ReplyDelete
  42. I think there is a time when I would have found it sexy, but not anymore. I think cigarettes are dangerous and very gross and unappealing. The models are beautiful, and some of these photos are amazing...better without the ciggies.

  43. A cigarette is simply a prop or an accessory in this medium.

Oil paint and film developers contain some of the deadliest toxins known to man, yet are artists who paint in oil or photography attacked for doing do so?

Smoking is a choice, as is eating fast-food or drinking alcohol; each of which have detrimental effects on the human body.

Some of the photos above are absolutely stunning, the cigarette fits the scene. Others are out of place, or seem to be trying too hard to be "sexy" or "bad".

    ReplyDelete
  44. It definitely bothers me. I just don't get what it brings to the photograph...

    ReplyDelete
  45. I'm don't want judge anyone who does smoke... to each her own.

A lot of those pics are stunning. Cigarette of Not (although I'd prefer the not) :)

    ReplyDelete
  46. i'm definitely not a fan of smoking and i don't find it appealing. but at the same time, i have to admit, it adds something to the model that gives them character. :)

  47. Wow- this is such an interesting post!! It's so true that smoking is so glamorized!! These pictures really show that...
    Great post! :)

  52. I do not smoke and do not find smoking sexy.
I think these Models are all so beautiful and would look better without the smokes.

  54. smoking is not cute. i had to do a photo shoot with cigarettes. not cool.

  55. haha - forever controversial topic in terms of whether or not the media should include cigarette in its content!

all i can say is those are beautiful images, nevertheless! great choice, xx

  59. Appalling - isn't it banned now even in editorial? Well in the US and UK probably not France and Italy!

  60. ICK! I started smoking when I was 11 and have just quit a few months ago.. its a disgusting habit and models should not be forced to smoke to look more "fashionable". I lost my dad to lung cancer before he made it to 50.. and it scares the shit out of me that my 14 year old sister and 18 year old brother are both smokers..

  61. In my opinion these photos are not pro or anti smoking. The cigarettes are just props, so while smoking is an appalling habit, these pictures are gorgeous.
    Xx

  62. I think the photos work in part because the smoking is something that one does while reflecting on something that just happened, or waiting on the next thing to happen.

Yet another fine, fine theme Carrie.

We should try to stay away from the habit though ... (hard as it is).

  63. i smoke myself, and i dont mind at all when others do, be it in real life, pictures or movies.. i actually think it adds character/personality to the photo, and a sense of confidence to the model.. so i have to say they look appealing to me ^-^

    ReplyDelete
  64. Smoking is a filthy habit...And I feel so bad for saying this but the pictures are appealing, there's just this va va voom to them.

    ReplyDelete
  65. I don't smoke, and I don't find the look of smoking particularly attractive. But it is a part of life, and these photographers are looking to capture life through art. I don't think that it's wrong to photograph models smoking. To me, it shows a contrast between the physical beauty of the models and the ugliness of smoking.

    ReplyDelete
  66. They're just fetish pics, and kinda gross ones at that (especially the "mother" picture; how tasteless). Any sexiness disappears the moment you think of how these women must smell.

    ReplyDelete
  67. I used to smoke and sometimes I still find it sexy, but I think it's very harmful, so it's better not to...
have a sweet day, darling, xoxo

  68. I dont smoke and I know its bad to say this but I find smoking to be sexy. These pics are evidence! If it didnt smell horrible and cause cancer I'd probably be a smoker. Great post:)

    ReplyDelete
  69. I'm not a smoker, but don't find these photos appalling. Yes, it's an unhealthy habit, but you can't deny that it sets the vibe/mood for these images. To each his own.. right? :)

Great to see everyone's views on the subject though! I love when a post brings up a healthy (or not so healthy) discussion!
